Schaumburg third in own invitational

This Thursday night, Schaumburg will try to secure its first berth in the Mid-Suburban League girls volleyball championship match since 2010.

The Saxons tuned up with five matches on their home floor Saturday, finishing third in their own invite.

Schaumburg fell to Rockton Hononegah (25-19, 25-22) in the third-place match.

Cary-Grove defeated St. Charles North for the title, 25-23, 25-23.

Top attackers for Schaumburg (2-3 in the tourney) were Oyinkan Akinola (40 kills), Jada Blackwell (10), Lexi Ross (7) and Mallory Gerber (7),

Jada Blackwell (33 assists) and Megan Hayes (31 assists) directed the attack while Hannah Moore collected 50 digs.

Coach Jeanette Pancratz' Saxons will take an overall record of 18-10 into Thursday's 6 p.m. match with visiting Conant (10-13, 3-5), coached by Jeanette's daughter Drewann.

The Saxons are 8-1 in the West, one match in front of Fremd (7-2) and Palatine (7-2), who face off against each other on the Vikes' floor also at 6 p.m. Thursday.

St Viator (20-11-1) went 3-2 in the Schaumburg tourney with wins over Larkin and East Peoria.

Ellie Mueller led the Lions with 25 digs while Kasia Sosin and Kaitlin O'Brien each had 18.

Grace Fedus served a team-high 9 aces and also led the Lions' attack with 30 kills followed by Gabi Thomas (19), Emily Hayes (17) and Alyssa Forbes (11).

O'Brien was 250-of-256 setting the attack with 86 assists.

Mizuno Cup: Barrington took fifth place with a record of 2-2 in the invite hosted by St. Charles East in Aurora.

The Fillies (7-21) defeated Guilford (25-22,25-20) and Hinsdale South (25-23, 25-21) while falling to Muskego, Leon (Fla.) and Lockport.

Among the top contributors for the Fillies were Katie Clement (26 kills), Olivia Hagan (9 aces, 26 digs), Jessica Jones (30 assists) and Annie Rolecek (31 assists).

Antioch Invite: Rolling Meadows placed seventh (1-4) with tis win coming over the Lake Zurich junior varsity 25-19, 25-10.

Hannah Mickey led the attack with 26 kills, Maddie Sellergren (17 kills), Nora Rasche (15 kills), Gabby Johns (14), Jenny Srnak (9) and Megan King (7 kills)

Megan King (39 assists) and Mallory King (21 assists) set the offense.

Glenbrook North Invite: Jori Radtke was nearly unstoppable for Stevenson's girls volleyball team in the Glenbrook North tournament.

The Patriots wrapped up play by outlasting Morton 30-32, 25-14, 25-19, as Radtke slammed 14 kills for the third time in four matches. She also had 14-kill efforts against Glenbrook North and Glenbrook North's JV. Stevenson (18-13) won its final two matches, including a 25-23, 26-24 decision over Buffalo Grove. Radtke's 7 kills led the way against the Bison.

The Morton match also saw Isabella Milejczyk and Corissa Kurth deliver 8 and 6 kills, respectively, for Stevenson. Morgan Berland served 7 aces and chalked up 17 digs. Kurth dished out 34 assists. Against Buffalo Grove, Radtke also had 4 aces, while Berland again registered 17 digs.

Milejczyk pounded 11 kills, and Jen Lichtenstein had 6 kills and 3 aces in a 14-25, 25-19, 17-16 loss to Maine West.

At Antioch: Lakes won its last three matches to place fifth in the Elaine Lonergan Memorial Tournament. The Eagles lost to Crystal Lake Central (25-16, 25-18) and Zion-Benton (25-23, 9-25, 15-13) before beating Lake Zurich JV (25-4, 25-8), Rolling Meadows (25-13, 25-4) and Shoreland Lutheran (25-9, 25-19).

McKenna Lahr had 39 kills, 27 digs and 12 aces for Lakes (27-6), while Megan Behrendt rang up 37 kills and 38 digs. Eagles setter Maddie Demo dished out 80 assists, while other contributors included Izzy Huntington (13 kills, 28 digs, 13 aces), Katie Billetdeaux (12 kills, 8 blocks) and Allie Grandos (8 kills, 12 blocks).

Crystal Lake Central defeated Lake Forest 25-13, 25-14 for the championship. Lake Forest (4-1 tourney) placed Jenna Dethlefsen (36 kills, 4 blocks), Meghan McGrail (27 kills) and Claire Torkelsen (19 kills, 8 blocks, 2 aces) on the all-tournament team.

At Oswego: Vernon Hills lost four of its five matches, dropping the Cougars' record to 8-18.
