U of I fraternity will remain open despite suspension

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The CEO of the Alpha Tau Omega National Fraternity says the University of Illinois chapter will remain active even though it was suspended by the university.

Wynn Smiley says the university suspended the local chapter through 2016 due to a May incident in which about 40 fraternity members vandalized some cars and a dorm on campus. The News-Gazette reports police estimated the vandalism resulted in thousands of dollars worth of damage.

Although Smiley acknowledges the students' behavior is inexcusable, he says he thinks the university went too far with its punishment.
