Schaumburg earns share of West title

The Schaumburg girls volleyball team clinched a tie for first in the Mid-Suburban West on Thursday night with a 25-23, 25-9 victory at Hoffman Estates.

Senior Oyinkan Akinola put down 8 kills for the Saxons while Mallory Gerber and Lexi Ross each added 3.

Schaumburg improved to 16-6 and 8-1 in the West, one match ahead of Fremd (7-2) and Palatine (7-2) with one to play.

Schaumburg hosts Conant next Thursday.

The Saxons' defense received 8 digs from Akinola and 7 from Hannah Moore (2 aces) while Megan Hayes (7 assists) and Jada Blackwell (5) set the offense.

Hoffman (3-24, 0-9) was led by Kelsey Warford's 3 kills while Kaitlyn Imburgia had 7 assists and Lauren Schader 5.

Fremd d. Barrington: Fremd senior Lane Hindenburg put down 15 kills while Maisie Koo and Hope Schroeder each had 5 for the Vikings in a 20-25, 25-18, 25-16 victory over the visiting Fillies (5-18, 2-7).

Carly Roberts handed out 14 assists and Jackie Mursuli added 7 for Fremd (16-6, 7-2) while Aubrey Stegich had 16 digs followed by Hindenburg and Sarah Roberts with 10 apiece.

Wheeling d. Prospect: Wheeling went above .500 in the MSL East with a 20-25, 29-27, 25-19 victory over visiting Prospect.

Lading the attack for the Wildcats (11-12, 5-4) were Timber Terrell (6 kills), Michaela Vasey (6), Lani Greenberg (3), Deanna Kuzmanic (2) and Domenica Montesin (2). Sabrina Semeria handed out 15 assists and Kuzmanic 5 while Alexa Laureano collected 32 digs.

Prospect (11-12, 5-4) was paced on attack by Sammy Withey (12 kills, 12 digs), Mary Mazurek (5 kills, 13 digs) and Maggie Porwit (3 kills, 5 digs) as Michelle Haaning collected 20 assists. Sarah Cutaia recorded 24 digs and Rachael Grippo had 20.

Palatine d Conant: Visiting Palatine raised its record to 19-7 and 7-2 in the MSL West with a 25-19, 25-21 triumph as Jess Lundell (9 kills), Heather Holz (7), Meg Angelaccio (6) and Alaina Mikkelsen (5) led the Pirates' attack.

Sophomore setter Sydney Christiansen handed out 29 assists with 7 digs and Alyssa Kronberg collected 11 digs and 2 aces for the winners.

DeeDee Durr (6 kills), Alissa Wachal (4) and Katie Lomas (4) were top attackers for Conant (10-14, 3-6) which received 15 assists from Elisa Ambrose and 16 digs from Dhara Patel.

Rolling Meadows d. Elk Grove: The host Mustangs (6-17, 2-7) were paced on attack by Hannah Mickey (7 kills), Maddie Sellergren (6) and Jenny Srnak (6) in a 25-20, 25-16 victory over Elk Grove (5-17, 1-8).

Megan King (7 assists), Madeline Rebsamen (6) and Mickey (3) set the offense while Mickey (10 digs) and Sellergren (8) paced the defense.

Marian Central d. St. Viator: The visiting Hurricanes posted a 26-24, 19-25, 19-25 in Arlington Heights over the Lions (17-9-1, 1-3) in the East Suburban Catholic Conference match.

Grace Fedus (10 kills), Gabi Thomas (7), Alyssa Forbes (4) and Emily Hayes (4) led the Lions' attack set by Kaitlin O'Brien (24 assists) and Ellie Meyer (3 assists).
