Delays hit airports again

Flights delays yesterday afternoon topped an hour and a half at O'Hare International Airport and about an hour at Midway International Airport after problems with several phone lines communicating flight information went down. The flight workload has been transferred to other air traffic control centers since the sabotage of Aurora's Chicago Center on Sept. 26. More than 1,600 flights have been canceled and there have been numerous delays since then. Full story.

North Aurora Activity Center may come down sooner

A North Aurora committee wants architects to prepare demolition plans for the 83-year-old North Aurora Activity Center, the former school at Route 31 and State Street. The village closed the building in March after determining the winter's heavy snows had caused damaged joists to nearly fail, and a ceiling to collapse. Full story.

Retirement approved for controversial Batavia teacher

The Batavia school board yesterday approved the sudden retirement of a high school social studies teacher with a controversial history. John Dryden had been disciplined last year after advising students about the right to not incriminate themselves before distributing a survey about personal behaviors. Full story.

Narrow escape for driver in freight train crash

A man whose car stalled on the railroad tracks in Des Plaines yesterday morning just narrowly escaped before a freight train slammed into the car. The crash happened about 4:30 a.m. on the Union Pacific line at Mount Prospect Road just north of Touhy Avenue. Full story.

Anti-bullying author brings message to Lake Park

The author of the best-selling anti-bullying book "Thirteen Reasons Why" spoke with students yesterday in Roselle. Jay Asher signed copies at both campuses of Lake Park High School and spoke with kids about the effect words and actions have on others. Full story.

Traffic

Construction continues on Route 83 and Rollins Road in Round Lake Beach. People are no longer able to turn left or right from Route 83 onto Rollins. People should expect delays. Full traffic.

Bears' Marshall missing in action

The Bears aren't pasting Brandon Marshall's picture on the side of milk cartons just yet, but the five-time Pro Bowler hasn't been fully present in this year's offense. A sprained ankle likely factors into low numbers and put him at fourth on the Bears in receptions and receiving yards. Full story.

High intensity in Bulls' preseason opener

A scuffle involving Paul Pierce, Joakim Noah and Jimmy Butler helped ring in the new season. There was a second scuffle late in the third quarter when Butler was taken out by a hard screen from Washington's Kevin Seraphin. The Bulls received good signs from Derrick Rose and rookie Nikola Mirotic but lost to the Wizards 85-81 at the United Center. The defeat ended the Bulls' 12-game preseason winning streak.
