Rain to move out this morning, cold weather to follow

Cooler winds pushing a strong air mass south from Canada could bring record-setting cold temperatures this weekend, meteorologists say.

Amy Seeley, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service, said the heavy rainfall is expected to end at around 10 a.m., leaving cooler weather in its place. Scattered showers will linger throughout Friday, she said.

The weather - along with the fire last week at the Federal Aviation Administration Tower in Aurora - is causing delays at O'Hare International Airport, Flightaware.com is reporting. The website reports about 200 inbound and outbound flights at O'Hare have already been canceled this morning.

Metra is also experiencing delays due to the weather. Trains on the Union Pacific Northwest Line are being halted because a power line fell across the tracks at the Cumberland Station. People are asked to check their train status at metrarail.com.

The cool air will cause temperatures to slowly dip Friday afternoon, dipping the area into the upper 30s overnight Friday into Saturday, Seeley said.

She said the high temperature of 62 degrees will be felt Friday morning, but temperatures will dip slightly to 59 degrees Friday afternoon.

She said temperatures will remain low throughout the weekend, and potentially reach a record low for high temperatures Saturday afternoon.

"We are forecasting to top out at only 50 degrees Saturday, so we're close," she said.

The record low for high temperatures on Oct. 4 is 48 degrees, she said. that mark was set in 1871.
