Rosh Hashana starts at sundown today

Sundown today marks the beginning of one of the holiest holidays on the Jewish calendar — Rosh Hashana.

The holiday also is known as the Jewish New Year, and suburban Jews will be marking it by attending services at temples and eating dinner with friends and family.

Rosh Hashana starts the year 5775 on the Jewish calendar. “Shana tova” is the best way to wish “good year” to Jewish friends or colleagues celebrating the holiday.

Rosh Hashana marks the start of Jewish High Holy Days and is followed by Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, which starts at sundown Oct. 3.
