Man arrested in Jesse White Tumbling teen's death
A Chicago man was ordered held Wednesday in lieu of $1 million bail in connection with the shooting death of a member of the Jesse White tumbling team.
Quinton Evans was charged with first-degree murder in the death of 16-year-old Devonshay Lofton. Evans, 19, was arrested Monday for criminal trespass in an unrelated incident, according to Chicago police. Witnesses to the shooting of Lofton later identified him as one of those who fired shots at the Lincoln Park High School student.
Evans and an unidentified accomplice were riding their bicycles along a North Side Chicago street when they opened fire on Lofton and his friends on Thursday, said Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Colleen Rogers.
An officer on patrol heard the gunshots and was told by witnesses which direction the gunmen fled. Another officer was able to chase Evans and his friends as they jumped off their bicycles and ran, Rogers said. An officer involved in the chase accidently shot himself in the foot, allowing the suspects to get away.
A semi-automatic handgun recovered from where Evans was seen matched the casings left at the crime scene, Rogers said.
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, who founded the tumbling team, described Lofton as a " gentleman in every way," adding he was "well-liked and highly respected."
It wasn't immediately known if Evans has obtained legal representation.
