Police: 10 cows shot, killed after truck overturns

MOUNT VERNON - Ten cows that escaped from a cattle truck after it overturned before dawn Tuesday while exiting a southern Illinois freeway were shot and killed by police when they became a traffic hazard to other motorists, Illinois State Police said.

The truck's driver, a 56-year-old man from Somerset, Kentucky, sustained minor injuries in the crash shortly before 5 a.m. at Interstate 64 and Illinois Route 37, police said.

It was not immediately clear how many head of cattle were on the truck.

The trucker was ticketed for improper lane usage, police said.
