Wheeling man crashes into parked car, lamp post, spa

A 68-year-old Wheeling man was charged with three moving violations Sunday after crashing into a parked car, a lamp post and a spa, in that order, near the intersection of Miner and Dunton in Arlington Heights just before 5 p.m.

Arlington Heights Police Sgt. Alan Baumgartner said the man, who was not identified, was charged with improper backing, failure to reduce speed to avoid crash and damage to village property.

Baumgartner said the man was in his Pontiac Vibe facing west on Miner when he attempted to reverse his car at a high rate of speed. The man soon lost control and hit a car parked on the north side of the street, a Mercedes CLK sedan, the sergeant said.

Hitting the Mercedes knocked the Pontiac off course and it ended up going south across lanes of traffic, at which point the man's vehicle struck and knocked over a village lamp post, Baumgartner said.

But not even the lightpole could stop the car, which then crashed into the corner of the Adam and Eve Salon and Spa at 7 E. Miner St., the sergeant said.

Baumgartner said the village building inspector investigated the damage to the building and Arlington Heights Public Works dealt with the safety hazard caused by the lamp post being knocked over.

No one was injured in the crash.
