Schaumburg, Hersey perfect after MSL's first half

Schaumburg's girls volleyball team advanced through the first half of its Mid-Suburban West schedule undefeated after posting a 25-21, 25-11 victory over Hoffman Estates on Thursday night.

The host Saxons (8-4, 5-0) were led on attack by senior Oyinkan Akinola (9 kills) while classmate Jada Blackwell kills added 4 and junior Abbie Rahn 2.

Megan Hayes (9 assists) and Blackwell (4 assists) handled the setting chores for the MSL West leaders while Blackwell also had 3 blocks.

Teammate Hannah Moore was 8-of-9 serving with an ace and also collected 6 digs against Hoffman (1-12, 0-5).

Hersey d. Buffalo Grove: Hersey (10-4) is 5-0 after the first round of MSL East play following a 25-18, 25-10 victory over visiting Buffalo Grove at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

The Huskies were led on attack by Liz Fuerst (6 kills), Gabri Olhava (6) Kelly Hill (5) and Katie Rozanski (3), who also had 7 blocks.

Caity Strozewski served 2 aces for Hersey while Courtney Stedman had 20 assists and Paige Pannozzo 9 digs.

Monica Browne's 6 kills led BG (11-6, 3-2) while Marie Georgoulis had 2 aces, 8 assists and 9 digs.

Palatine d. Conant: Meg Angelaccio (10 kills), Heather Holz (7) and Alaina Mikkelsen 6) and Jess Lundell (6) led the attack for host Palatine in a 25-23, 25-16 victory.

Sydney Christiansen handed out 30 assists for the winners (7-4, 3-2).

Alyssa Wachal and DeeDee Durr each had 3 kills for Conant (7-7, 2-3).

Prospect d. Wheeling: Prospect posted a 25-21, 27-25 win in its own Jean Walker Field House as senior Catherine Sherwood clubbed 8 kills to lead the attack.

Mary Mazurek added 5 kills for the Knights and Maggie Porwit 4.

Junior setter Michelle Haaning collected 21 assists while senior Rachel Grippo led the back row with 8 digs.

"We had a big team win as we brought energy and fun to the court," said Knights first-year coach Gabrielle Lovin, who saw her team improve to 5-3 and 3-2. "We have been working on maintaining focus. Tonight we did well in doing so."

Wheeling (8-10, 3-2) was led on attack by sophomore Timber Terrell (10 kills) and senior Lani Greenberg (8) while senior Alexa Laureano had 13 digs and senior Deanna Kuzmanic.

Rolling Meadows d. Elk Grove: Visiting Rolling Meadows (4-10, 1-4) earned its first win in the MSL East with a 28-26 25-15 triumph as Megan Mich was 15-of-15 serving with 5 aces for the Mustangs.

Maddie Sellergren (8 kills) and Hannah Mickey (5) led the Meadows' attack set by Megan King (9 assists) and Mich (10).

Sophomore Paige Connor led the back row with 12 digs.

Amber Lindfors had 6 kills and 1 block for the Grens (2-11, 0-5) while O'Rayn McAvoy put down 4 kills with a block.
