Girls volleyball: Fox Valley roundup Tuesday, Sept. 16
The Elgin High girls volleyball team inched closer to .500 for the season and won its first Upstate Eight River match of the season Tuesday, defeating West Chicago 21-25, 25-19, 25-23.
The Maroons (7-8, 1-2) won with defense as Julie Camarena had 19 digs, Mimi Hernandez 16, Tiana Palumbo (12 digs, 8 assists, 2 kills), Bopha Travis 11 and Kaylie Witsiepe 9.
Also contributing to the win were Abby Pierre-Louis (3 kills), Megan Alexander (2 kills, 3 blocks), Alisha Panthier (4 blocks), Nikki Zimmer (4 kills) and Emma Sirridge (2 blocks).
Larkin d. Streamwood: Amelia Gill had 5 kills and 3 digs and Danielle Newquist added 2 kills and 5 digs as the Royals won in the Upstate Eight River 25-10, 25-12. Izzy Orozco (4 kills), Ella Roland (4 kills, 2 digs) and Natalie Kofie (13 assists, 4 digs) also contributed for Larkin (7-11, 1-2).
St. Edward d. Fenton: Dominique Washington had 8 kills and Megan Barth added 6 to lead the Green Wave (9-3, 3-1) to a 23-25, 25-16, 25-12 Metro Suburban West win. Alyssa Saunders led the St. Edward defense with 5 digs.
CL South d. McHenry: Carly Nolan had 8 kills, Cassey Sivesind 7 assists and 4 blocks and Kendall Kilberger 9 assists and 4 blocks as the Gators rolled to a 25-17, 25-13 Fox Valley Conference Valley Division win. April Marchewka added 5 digs and 4 kills for Crystal Lake South (10-3, 3-1).
CL Central d. Hampshire: Erin Foss had 10 kills and Brittany Laffin 19 assists for the Whip-Purs in their 25-22, 25-19 FVC Fox loss.
Burlington Central d. Rockford Christian: Aly DeTamble had 10 kills and 3 aces and Jenna Runde added 15 digs and 2 aces as the Rockets (7-2, 3-0) won easily in the Big Northern East 25-11, 25-18. Lexie VanHiel added 5 kills and 3 blocks and Maddy Barry had 13 assists and 5 kills in the win.
Elgin Academy d. North Shore Country Day: Alysson Wittmeyer had 4 kills and 4 blocks and freshman Jessica Martinez added 12 assists and 5 aces to lead the Hilltoppers to a 25-14, 25-20 Independent School League win. Kaitlyn Pearson added 4 kills and 2 blocks to the win while Rachel Swyer (5 aces, 7 digs), Sophie Shapiro (11 digs), Madeline Sporina (6 digs) and Maggie Veltri (5 assists) also contributed.
Marian Central d. Harvest Christian: Mikayla Robinson had 8 kills and 2 aces and Jade Martinez 16 assists for Harvest Christian in its 25-14, 25-18 nonconference loss. Ellie Burzlaff added 4 kills an Shayna Manusos had 12 digs for the Lions (4-5).
