Cool weather expected today through the weekend

Meteorologists say people will wake up to unseasonably cool weather in the Chicago suburbs this morning, and that high temperatures could break a cold weather record established nearly 70 years ago.

The National Weather Service said on their website that cloudy and much cooler weather can be expected across the area today, as an early Autumn air mass spreads in behind yesterday's cold front.

Afternoon highs will range from around 60 degrees near the Illinois-Wisconsin border, meteorologists say, to the low to mid 60s south of Interstate 80.

Ricky Castro, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service, said the high temperatures of 60 degrees could beat a record of 61 degrees established in 1940. He said the area normally averages temperatures in the mid- to upper-70s.

Clouds will linger tonight, with temperatures dropping into the 40s in many areas outside of Chicago.

Showers are expected to develop Friday, especially in the afternoon, and continue through Friday night before ending.

Sunshine will make a reappearance on Saturday, though will similarly cool conditions continuing.

Temperatures will moderate through the 60s by Sunday, with dry and partly cloudy conditions rounding out the weekend.
