Arrow's pointing up for LZ product Hartman

Former Lake Zurich volleyball standout Alexis Hartman was the 2013 Wisconsin-Stevens Point Female Team Athlete of the Year.

She took home numerous awards as a junior, celebrating individual and team success.

Hartman hasn't lost a beat beginning in her senior season.

She was named the Most Valuable Player at the season-opening Saint Benedict Tournament after averaging 9.53 assists per set over the four matches in which Division III No. 3-ranked Stevens Point went unbeaten.

Hartman helped lead the Pointers to the final four of the national tourney last fall.

She ranked 10th in the nation in assists per set (10.72) and broke the single-season school record for assists (1,512).

Hartman was a second team all-American.

Women's soccer

Ohio senior goalkeeper Nicole Amari (Vernon Hills) made 6 saves and led the Bobcats to a 1-0 victory against Wright State in Dayton.

It marked Ohio's first victory and Amari came up big during the stretch with a save on a Wright State breakaway opportunity in the final 10 minutes.

It was Amari's second career shutout.

Two days later, she was tested with regularity during a 3-0 road loss to top-25 side Kentucky but she kept the Bobcats in the game with a career-high 13 saves.

Women's volleyball

Carthage junior setter Karen Chin (Mundelein) had 137 total set assists and 10 service aces in four matches at the Elmhurst Invitational, where the Lady Reds went 4-0.

• Augustana senior outside hitter Emily Leazer (St. Viator) was named the Most Valuable Player as her team won the Viking Classic with a 4-0 record. Leazer averaged 2.25 kills per game along with four service aces and 44 digs.

Women's cross country

All-Great Lakes Valley Conference performer, Kristen Bonsor, a resident of Antioch, is a redshirt junior for Lewis Univeristy.

The Flyers have been tabbed tabbed No. 18 in the country according to the NCAA Division II Women's Cross Country Preseason Team Rankings.

• Augustana senior Becca Sund (Palatine) was named the "Runner of the Week" in the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin.

Sund was selected after an outstanding performance over the Labor Day weekend.

She took up right where she left off last year.

The team co-captain was the Vikings' MVP a year ago and she once again was the ringleader as the 2014 season kicked off at the Fighting Bee Open in Crow Creek Park in Bettendorf, Iowa.

Sund placed second in the 4,000-meter race (2.49 miles) with a time of 15:25. The only runner to beat Sund was junior Kristen Garwood of Hannibal-Lagrange with a winning time of 15:12. Sund bested a pair of St. Ambrose runners for the runner-up position. Rebecca Wilder and Dominique Guinnane, both of the host Bees, finished third and fourth respectively with times of 15:26 and 15:26.5.

Men's soccer

Marquette redshirt freshman midfielder Daniel Szczepanek (Warren) made his collegiate debut with the Golden Eagles during Indiana's Adidas/IU Credit Union Classic in Bloomington. Szczepanek played 22 minutes during the Golden Eagles' 2-1 loss to Notre Dame and then another 20 minutes off the bench during Marquette's 1-0 loss to Indiana.

• Eastern Illinois redshirt freshman Sean Kirwan (Warren) contributed an assist on a Dominic Recca goal during a 2-0 victory against Saint Francis.

Women's tennis

Augustana sophomore Lauren Goggin (Buffalo Grove)currently leads the team with a 6-0 record at the No. 1 singles position. Sophomore Dana Goggin (Buffalo Grove) is 5-1 at No. 2 singles.

As a team, the Vikings are 26-2 in dual matches at the numbers one through four singles positions.

The Goggins twins are 6-3 at number one doubles to lead the team.

Women's soccer

DePaul freshman Alexa Ben (Schaumburg) is quickly making her presence felt in the collegiate ranks. She scored her first goal to help rally the No. 25 Blue Demons to a 3-1 victory against Illinois State in Chicago.

Trailing by a goal 26 minutes in, Ben responded just one minute later with her first college goal to tie the score at 1-1. The Blue Demons tallied twice more and never looked back.

DePaul's Sarah Gorden (Conant) played a full 90 minutes on the back line, helping the Blue Demons improve to 5-0-0 on the season, tying for the fastest start in program history alongside the Blue Demons' 2001 squad.

Men's cross country

Tulsa freshman Steven Salvano (Buffalo Grove) finished 23rd in The Hurricane Cross Country Festival, a 4-mile event.

Football

• Becoming the first freshman to start a season opener at quarterback during coach Norm Eash's 28 years at Illinois Wesleyan, Jack Warner (Hersey) completed 21 of 30 passes for 292 yards and 3 touchdowns while also rushing for 52 yards on 9 carries in a 42-35 victory over Franklin College (Ind).

• Luis Leguer, a two-sport standout from Prospect High School, is playing at Augustana for coach Rob Cushman's Viking program.

Leguer was a versatile performer for Coach Mike Sebestyen at Prospect, playing everywhere but on the lines on both sides of the ball.

In addition, he kicked, punted and returned kicks for the Knights, earning three varsity letters.
