Deerfield man killed while changing tire

RACINE, Wis. - A man who apparently stopped to change a flat tire Sunday night on the interstate in Racine County and was struck and killed by a passing motorist has been identified as a Deerfield resident.

The Wisconsin State Patrol is investigating the death of Joseph Lopiccolo, 62, which happened about 10:30 p.m. Sunday along westbound Interstate 94.

Authorities say the driver who struck the man stopped at the scene. A trooper found the victim in a nearby ditch and began CPR. Lopiccolo could not be revived.

Preliminary results of an autopsy Monday determined Lopiccolo died of blunt force trauma consistent with being hit by a car, Racine County Medical Examiner Michael Payne said. Toxicology reports are pending.
