Pirates take a pair from Cubs

The Pittsburgh Pirates spoiled a beautiful Saturday for the Cubs and their fans at Wrigley Field.

After winning the resumption of Friday's suspended game 5-3 in 11 innings, the Pirates took charge early in the regularly scheduled contest and cruised to a 5-0 victory before 36,867 fans.

"We had a couple of opportunities we weren't able to cash in on," Cubs manager Rick Renteria said after the first game. "So tip your hat to them. We just fell a little short."

Left-hander Felix Doubront started the second game for the Cubs and worked 5 innings, giving up 5 hits and 2 runs. He threw 81 pitches, 64 over the first three innings.

The Pirates scored single runs in the first and third innings off Doubront. Dan Straily, recently recalled from Class AAA Iowa, gave up a run in the seventh. Lefty Zac Rosscup allowed a run in the eighth.

Arodys Vizcaino made his Cubs debut in the ninth and gave up a leadoff homer to Jordy Mercer. Vizcaino is a highly touted prospect who has come back from Tommy John surgery while in the Atlanta organization. The Cubs obtained him two years ago in a trade for pitcher Paul Maholm.

Cubs shortstop Javier Baez struck out his first three times up before grounding out in the eighth. In the first game, Baez struck out four times and looked to roll over his ankle as he struck out to end the game. Baez was good to go in the second game.

"Very violent swing," Renteria said of Baez.
