Girls volleyball / Northwest roundup

Hersey's girls volleyball team, seeking a 12th straight Mid-Suburban East title, opened its bid in 2014 with a 25-20, 25-17 victory at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

Gabri Olhava led the Huskies' attack with 7 kills, followed by Liz Fuerst (4), Zoe Strozewski (4), Caity Strozewski (3) and Kelly Hill (3).

Courtney Stedman added 2 kills while directing the offense with 20 assists.

Paige Pannozzo (11 digs) sparked the back row for Hersey (2-2, 1-0).

Prospect (2-2, 0-1) was led on attack by Kalei Myers (5 kills) and Maggie Porwit (3) while Michelle Haaning had 3 aces and 12 assists.

"We played well but still have to fix the little things," said Knights coach Gabrielle Lovin. "Unforced errors killed us. We'll learn from this match and refocus for next week."

Schaumburg d Palatine: Oyinkan Akinola (10 kills) and Abbie Rahn (12) led the attack for host Schaumburg in a 19-25, 25-23, 25-18 triumph.

Meghan Hayes handed out 21 assists and Hannah Moore served a pair of aces for the winners who are 3-1 and 1-0 in the MSL West.

Fremd d. Hoffman Estates: Senior Lane Hindenburg put down a match-high 9 kills as the visiting Vikings (2-1, 1-0) posted a 25-11, 25-7 victory.

Carly Roberts (10 assists) and Jackie Mursuli (3 assists) ran the offense while Aubrey Stegich (10 digs) connected for 3 aces and Roberts 2. Mackenzie Bednarek and Maise Koo each had 2 blocks.

Senior setter Kaitlyn Imburgia had 5 assists and 2 kills for the Hawks (0-4, 0-1).

Conant d. Barrington: Junior middle blocker Rachel Delanois (5 kills) and DeeDee Durr (4) led the attack for Conant (2-1, 1-0) in a 25-19, 26-24 victory.

Elisa Ambrose collected 8 setting assists for the Cougars, who along with Fremd, host the Peggy Scholten Volleyball Classic this weekend.

Defending MSL West champ Barrington (1-2, 0-1) was led by Kati Clement (8 kills), Megan Talbot (5) and Teigen Eilertsen (4).

Wheeling d. Rolling Meadows: Sophomore outside hitter Timber Terrell put down 8 kills and Lani Greenberg added 6 for the host Wildcats who won 25-11, 25-22 triumph.

Sabrina Semeria handed out 18 assists while Deanna Kuzmanic had 3 with 3 kills and an ace.

Semeria and Michaela Vasey each served 3 aces for the Wildcats (4-4, 1-0).

Maddie Dellergren and Nora Rasche each had 4 kills to lead the Mustangs' attack which was set by Megan Mich (6 assists) and Megan King (5). Caroline Barczak had 9 digs for Meadows (0-4, 0-1).

Leyden d. Maine West: Sophomore setter Autumn McGee (4 kills, 2 aces, 17 assists), junior outside hitter Emily Steininger (8 kills, 2 aces) and senior middle hitter Camille Lazzarotto (4 kills, 4 blocks, 3 aces) helped lead host Leyden to a 25-12, 25-22 victory.
