Man wants Zimbabwe's president deposed for defense

Lawyers for a Chicago man accused of illegally lobbying U.S. lawmakers say Zimbabwe's president should be deposed for his defense.

C. Gregory Turner wants a federal judge to order Robert Mugabe to give videotaped evidence supporting his defense against charges he lobbied lawmakers to lift sanctions against Zimbabwe's president and other regime members. Prosecutors allege the 72-year-old Chicago businessman did so on a promise of $3.4 million.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that in a court filing Thursday, Turner's lawyers contend he won't have a fair trial unless U.S. District Judge Elaine Bucklo orders Mugabe to give a deposition when he visits New York later this month for a United Nations meeting. Turner is scheduled to stand trial on Sept. 29.

A second man has pleaded guilty to illegal lobbying.
