Baxter refutes reports of impending move to Boston area

Deerfield-based Baxter International does not plan to move headquarters of either of its spinoff businesses to the Boston area, a spokeswoman said Thursday, refuting a report in the Boston Business Journal.

"As we stated in March, when we announced plans to create two separate, independent global health care companies, the corporate headquarters of both companies will be located in northern Illinois," Deborah Spak,

Baxter's director of global communications, said in an email.

The Boston Business Journal, quoting unnamed real estate sources, is reporting Baxter used the code name "Project Tiger" to seek 150,000 to 200,000 square feet of office space for a headquarters in Cambridge, Mass. The journal wrote on Wednesday that the company expects to subsequently add 200,000 square feet more in Cambridge.

Baxter in March announced plans to split into two units next year, with one focusing on medical products and the other on pharmaceuticals. "Given Baxter's size and scope, as well as our many partnerships and collaborations, there are often rumors circulating," Spak wrote in the email Thursday. "As a matter of course, we do not comment on rumors or speculation."
