Martin helps Cougars sweep Bandits

The Kane County Cougars rallied with 4 runs in the eighth inning to complete a sweep of the River Bandits 4-1 at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark in Geneva on Thursday night.

Quad Cities starter Troy Scribner (0-2) held the Cougars nearly hitless through 7 innings. Chesny Young had become the first Cougars' baserunner with a two-out single in the bottom of the fifth.

With the Cougars trailing 1-0, Young led off the eighth with a double and moved to third on Carlos Penalver's single. River Bandits manager made a trip to the mound and decided to keep Scribner in the game.

Trey Martin foiled that strategy with a 3-run homer, his second of the season, that knocked out Scribner. Victor Caratini tacked on another run with an RBI double to put the Cougars ahead 4-1.

Jasvir Rakkar (1-0) worked the eighth and ninth to earn his first win and stretch his scoreless streak to 11 innings.

The Cougars travel today to Appleton, Wis., for a three-game road series against the Timber Rattlers, where they will send Jonathan Martinez (8-5, 3.46 ERA) against Barrett Astin.
