University of Chicago electrical fire injures 8

The Chicago Fire Department says at least eight people have been taken to hospitals following an electrical fire in a University of Chicago building.

A department spokesman says at least three firefighters, one child and four civilians were injured Monday. He says the civilians' conditions ranged from good to serious and all were suffering from smoke inhalation. He says the firefighters are in good condition.

Crews responded to the 12-story building in the Hyde Park area and found electric transformers on fire in the basement. The university says it owns the 33-unit building where faculty and staff members live. The fire was contained and the building wasn't evacuated.

A Commonwealth Edison spokesman says about 260 customers are without power in the area. He couldn't confirm whether the outages were fire-related.
