UIC official demoted over plagiarism accusations
A University of Illinois at Chicago official has lost his position following a lawsuit alleging the official violated federal law by publicly discussing a dissertation and accusations of plagiarism.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports Lon Kaufman was demoted from his provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs positions to tenured professor in the Department of Biological Sciences.
Chicago State University interim provost and senior vice president Angela Henderson filed a lawsuit last month accusing UIC of violating a law barring schools from releasing private information on student academics without permission.
UIC officials confirmed media reports the school was reviewing a dissertation that earned Henderson her Ph.D. in nursing in August 2013.
UIC spokesman Bill Burton wouldn't comment on Kaufman's status, only saying he is "a tenured member of our faculty."
