Cougars claim win, series over Chiefs

PEORIA - In their final regular-season game at Dozer Park, the Kane County Cougars beat the Peoria Chiefs 4-2 in Midwest League action to take the series 2-1.

After the Chiefs (23-21, 60-53) grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first inning, the Cougars' Shawon Dunston Jr. was removed from the game and replaced by Trey Martin. Despite speculation, Dunston departed because of illness.

Martin provided a big run in the fifth when he led off with a double and eventually scored on Ben Carhart's sacrifice fly. Martin's insurance run came after Kevin Brown's game-tying sacrifice fly in the second and Jeffrey Baez's RBI single in the fourth.

The Cougars (27-19, 72-43) received solid pitching. Paul Blackburn (9-4) worked 5 innings and allowed 2 runs, earning his first win since July 8. Jose Arias contributed 3 shutout innings that included 5 strikeouts. For the second straight day, Tyler Bremer worked a scoreless ninth to pick up a save.

The Cougars continue their road trip with a four-game series in Cedar Rapids. Jonathan Martinez (8-5, 3.40 ERA) will start for the Cougars against Cedar Rapids' Mat Batts (0-0, 1.80).
