St. Matthew in Hawtorn Woods to host annual pig roast

St. Matthew Lutheran Church and School on Old McHenry Road, between Quentin and Midlothian roads in Hawthorn Woods, will host its 24th annual pig roast Sunday, Aug. 10.

Food will be served from noon to 5 p.m.

The event was started by St. Matthew member John Knoll when he asked a small group of women who were working on the church's annual chicken dinner if they might be interested in having a pig roast. What began with two pigs so many years ago has now grown to an event that attracts people from miles around.

Roasting 14 pigs and serving nearly 1,800 guests in 2013, St. Matthew will again prepare and serve a meal of roast pork, German potato salad, baked beans, applesauce and hot, buttered sweet corn. Culver's Ice Cream will be on the midway with their ice cream cones and turtle sundaes. Hot dogs, ice tea, soda, wine and beer will also be available for an additional cost.

The Alpiners musicians will return to provide musical entertainment throughout the afternoon. In addition to games, Bob Hirsch, Balloon Master, will entertain with his balloon creations and "Clowning Around," starring Rick Colon, will do comedy and magic. There also will be face painting, a spacewalk for children and bingo.

Admission is $14 for adults, $5 for children ages 4-10 and free for kids younger than 4.
