Peoria Library lands on National Register

PEORIA - Peoria's 104-year-old Lincoln Library has been placed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The (Peoria) Journal Star Reports library officials learned last week that the facility was awarded national registry status as a historic place worthy of preservation.

The library joins about 20 other Peoria properties on the National Register.

The city boasts a total of five library locations, but the Lincoln branch is the only one in the city financed by 19th century philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. While officials say parts of the 4,000-square-foot building have been altered, few of the other 1,700 libraries Carnegie financed are still standing and operating as libraries today.

Officials say the designation of the library as historic place brings visibility and prestige to the city of Peoria.
