Instagramming the Kane County Fair

As newspaper photojournalists we are bound by a set of standards and ethics. We document what we see without distorting the truth and try to make images that tell the story of the event we're covering.

Sometimes it's fun to just set that stuff aside and make some pictures the way we would if we weren't working.

So we decided that the four of us that make up the Fox Valley photo staff — Laura Stoecker, Brian Hill, John Starks and I — would hit the Kane County Fair last weekend in St. Charles with no restrictions or agenda other than to make some fun pictures and put them up on Instagram and then as a gallery for our readers.

Three of us used just our phones to shoot pictures. Brian Hill took it in a different direction by using his camera but with a plastic Lensbaby tilt/shift lens with a video filter.

The process was totally different but the feel is the same. Photographers shooting whatever caught their eye and moving on to the next thing that caught their eye. No captions, no stories, just fun pictures for the sake of fun pictures.

The four of us often post pictures on Instagram from assignments, sometimes to share the pictures from the event and sometimes just to give some insight on how we see what we see.

We'd love it if you would take a moment and follow us: Brian Hill @thebrianhill; John Starks @johnstarksphoto; Rick West @rickwest and Laura Stoecker @laurastoeckerdailyherald.
