Get your exercise: Walk across campus

Harper College will soon open a parking garage so that students and staff can avoid walking from the more distant parking lots to their classes on the modest-size campus, according to a July 7 article. As both a former member of the staff and also a student, I agree that on cold, wintry days I've had more pleasant walking workouts at an enclosed mall or the gym, but I hardly found the brisk walk unbearable. I've never considered exercise fun; rather, I consider it a necessary part of being a health-conscious nutritionist.

Most students are cash strapped and time crunched. I wonder if they are smart enough to realize this is one time they can multi-task effectively: Engage in weight-bearing exercise, rev their metabolism and reduce their stress level easily as they hike to class.

Perhaps they should think twice before they shrink their savings and grow their debt.
