Chicago wants more people to drive electric cars

CHICAGO - The city of Chicago is trying to encourage more people to drive electric cars.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel on Friday announced a new website that will be a "one-stop-shop" for information on electric vehicles, including rebates and incentives. People also will have the chance to test drive an electric vehicle at the Taste of Chicago in Grant Park on Saturday.

In a statement, Emanuel says driving an electric vehicle is a "smart choice." He says it saves residents money and helps the environment.

Emanuel says: "The City of Chicago is committed to an environment in which energy efficient vehicles are the norm, not the exception."

The city also is working with other organizations to help install vehicle charging stations at multi-unit dwellings, such as apartment and condominium buildings.
