Barrington doubles up with Bob Frisk Paddock Cup, Trophy

Barrington High School made a splashy debut when it joined the Mid-Suburban League in 1977-78.

The Broncos' boys sports program immediately won the Paddock Cup, the award that is symbolic of overall varsity sports excellence in the Mid-Suburban.

Barrington waited until 1992-93 for its first Paddock Trophy, the award that recognizes varsity sports achievement in girls sports.

The sports excellence has continued through the years at the District 220 school.

The two prestigious traveling trophies make just one stop for 2013-14. Barrington is the official winner of both varsity sports awards, an accomplishment the school last achieved in 2006-07.

In June of 2009 the two Mid-Suburban varsity sports awards given by Paddock Publications officially added the name of Bob Frisk, who originated both awards and retired from the Daily Herald in 2008 after 50 years at the newspaper as an enthusiastic supporter of the high schools.

Barrington's boys program won the Bob Frisk Paddock Cup for boys for the eighth time and third time in the last four school years. The Broncos were the defending champions.

Barrington averaged 11.1 points per varsity boys sport for 2013-14 when 14 is the maximum for a conference championship. Fremd, which has won 11 Paddock Cups, finished second at 9.7 points per sport and was followed by Hersey (9.5), Prospect (8.9), Palatine (7.7) and Schaumburg (7.3) in the first division.

Barrington's Fillies won the Bob Frisk Paddock Trophy for girls with an average of 10.6 points per sport. This was the 13th Trophy championship for the Fillies, who had finished second to Fremd in 2012-13.

Following the Fillies in the MSL first division for 2013-14 were Fremd (10.0), Prospect (9.7), Hersey (8.6), Conant (8.4) and Buffalo Grove (7.8).

Showing a nice balance throughout the league, eight different Mid-Suburban schools won boys championships in 2013-14. Seven different MSL schools captured girls' titles.

Points are awarded for each school's finish in Mid-Suburban League varsity only competition, and every sport is treated the same. There are no so-called minor sports. They are all considered major at the varsity level. Success in state tournaments is not a factor.

Conference champs receive 14 points, an important plus in the standings, and the runner-up earns 12. Points then are distributed down the line (11, 10, 9, etc.) according to final position. There is a formula that determines points for varsity sports that do not have overall standings but only division finishes.

Through a 1997 agreement with the MSL Board of Control, complete standings of Nos. 1 through 12 are not published. Only first-division schools are announced. The publication of 1-12 put too much negative emphasis on some schools when the awards were initiated to recognize overall success.
