One person shot, three police officers injured in Zion

Three police officers were injured and a suspect was shot during a traffic stop near 26th Street and Lewis Avenue in Zion, authorities said.

George Filenko, chief of the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force, said charges are pending against the unidentified suspect, who is hospitalized after he was shot once by police about 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Filenko said the three injured officers were released from the hospital after being checked over by doctors.

The officers were conducting a traffic stop when the driver of the vehicle attempted to speed away from the scene, authorities said.

The vehicle hit all three officers, Filenko said, and knocked one to the pavement. One officer suffered a concussion from the fall, he said.

The driver was shot by police while trying to flee, Filenko said. He added the driver stopped after being shot, allowing two passengers to run away.

The driver was taken to a Lake County hospital for surgery.

Filenko said the two people who fled the vehicle were found late Tuesday and were questioned. Charges are pending against one or all of the suspects involved.

The Lake County Major Crimes Task Force was called in by the Zion Police to conduct an independent investigation, Filenko said.
