Naperville man killed in I-55 crash

A Naperville man who was killed Wednesday afternoon after he lost control of his SUV near Lemont may have had a medical situation, police said.

Vernon H. Joy Jr., 71, was traveling south on Interstate 55 near Interstate 355 at about 2:30 p.m. when his 2013 GMC Acadia left the roadway, traveled through a grassy area and then struck a light pole, Illinois State Police Trooper Aldo Schumann said.

Joy was alone in the vehicle and no other drivers were involved in the crash. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead, Schumann said.

"The medical staff at the hospital believes that a medical condition may have caused (the crash)," Schumann said.
