Hersey, Prospect to meet in regional final

Hersey ended Maine West's boys volleyball season with a 25-20, 25-19 victory Tuesday to earn a spot against host Prospect in Wednesday's 7 p.m. regional final.

Prospect bounced back from a first-set loss to eliminate Notre Dame 24-26, 25-16, 25-18 as senior Grant Andler (22 kills) along with juniors Eryk Krzyzak and Alex Blethen (7 kills each) powered the attack.

Hersey got 3 aces apiece from Bart Migus and Kevin Messer, plus 12 digs from Fotis Christacos, 3 blocks from Mike Fuerst and a balanced attack featuring Migus (7 kills), Matt Torvik (5) and Fuerst and Angelo Coniglio (4 each).

Hersey (30-6) and Prospect (22-12) finished 1-2 in the MSL East standings this spring.

at Westminster Christian: Top seeded Lake Park stopped Rolling Meadows 25-15, 25-16 in regional semifinal play.

Tommy Murphy had a team-best 6 kills and Tom Srnak had 3 for the Mustangs, who finished with an overall record of 14-23.

The Lancers will meet Elk Grove in Wednesday's 7 p.m. regional final after the Grenadiers eliminated Palatine in a 25-12, 25-20 decision.

A balanced attack helped out Elk Grove (23-14) as Kevin Wickstrom led the way with 7 kills and Sam Ostling, Sam Jasutis and Geoffrey Dybicz had 5 apiece.

at York: Barrington turned back a challenge from Fremd 25-19, 25-22 to earn a spot in Wednesday's regional final against York. The Dukes advanced by ousting South Elgin 25-20, 25-22.

at Maine East: Top seed New Trier ended Wheeling's season with a 25-12, 25-12 victory. Jeremy Schultz had 4 kills, Alex Kais had 3 and Juan Salgado had a team-best 10 digs for the Wildcats (7-28-1).

at Schaumburg: No. 3 seed Buffalo Grove survived a strong challenge from Geneva 26-24, 22-25, 25-19 to earn a spot against St. Charles East in Wednesday's regional final. The Saints eliminated the regional hosts Saxons 28-26, 16-25, 25-17.

Buffalo Grove got big games from Kevin Shanahan (9 kills), Brandon Reed (8 kills), Zack Schnittker (30 assists, 3 aces, 3 kills), Tullio Ruscitti (22 digs), Zach Masciopinto (11 digs) and Alex Franz (5 kills) and Athan Cruz (8 kills).

at Glenbrook North: St. Viator took the first set 25-20 before the regional host Spartans bounced back to grab the next two 25-17 and 25-14.

Glenbrook North will meet Niles West in the regional final. Niles West defeated Evanston 25-19, 25-22 in Tuesday's other semifinal at Glenbrook North.
