Lightning strikes damage two Naperville houses

Lightning strikes sparked two house fires Tuesday night in Naperville as storms swept through the area, authorities said.

No flames were found at the first house, where two windows on the third floor were damaged from an apparent lightning strike, Fire Chief Mark Puknaitis said.

The damage was reported at 7:14 p.m. on the 700 block of Willow Road. Puknaitis said residents who were home at the time were across the street by the time firefighters arrived. No one was injured and no damage estimate was available Wednesday.

A report of the second lightning strike came about an hour later at 8:24 p.m., when a house on the 900 block of Elm Street was reported to be on fire.

Puknaitis said lightning apparently struck the roof, sparking the fire and causing an estimated $110,000 damage.

No one was injured in the Elm Street fire, either, and Puknaitis said firefighters were able to put out the flames quickly and begin responding to other storm-related calls.

Puknaitis said Naperville's police and fire departments responded to 235 calls for service, including for cars stuck in flooded streets, between 3 and 10 p.m. Tuesday.
