Runner-up state finish for Buffalo Grove

Three Mid-Suburban League teams finished in the top 10 of the IHSA badminton state finals on Saturday at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston.

Leading the way was Mid-Suburban League champion Buffalo Grove (15.0), which placed second to state champ Thornton Fractional South (16.0).

Prospect and Fremd each scored 10.0 points to tie for sixth place.

Fremd's Angela Wu took fourth place at No. 1 singles after defeating Naperville Central's Allison Ma 21-17, 21-19 in the quarterfinals.

Prospect's Kiley Walsh lost to TF South's Jessica Gomez 22-20, 21-15 in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, Buffalo Grove's Julie Jambrone and Katelyn Sommers were runners-up (21-19, 23-21) to Cassie Breshock and Jenna Pasko of TF South.

Jambrone and Sommers defeated Prospect's Jessica Hirsch and Stephanie Venturelli 21-16, 19-21, 21-12 in the semifinals.

It was an all-MSL third-place match as Hirsch and Venturelli defeated Mady Berns and Madison Fortman of Buffalo Grove 14-21, 21-19, 22-20.

Suzi Choi and Annie Parng of Fremd took fifth place, defeating Amy Wey and Samantha McClary of Hinsdale Central 21-19, 21-11.
