Barrington edges Schaumburg at Palatine
The game between the No. 4 and 5 seeds in the Palatine girls water polo sectional played out about like you might think:
It was really close.
Barrington led by 3 at the half before weathering a fourth-quarter rally from the Saxons to win 8-7 on Thursday.
The Fillies got a game-high 4 goals from Sam Gavars, along with 2 from Maddie Burrell and Mia Latimer.
Delaney Houts and Krystal Vezzetti had 2 each for Schaumburg, which wraps up its season with a record of 8-15.
Fourth-seeded Barrington (11-17) advanced to a semifinal matchup against top seed Conant at 7 p.m. Friday.
• Mid-Suburban West champion Conant got 6 goals from Carmen Rosas and another 3 from Emily Weingart to power past Hoffman Estates 13-2. Rosas also had 4 steals and Sam Wooley had 3 for the Cougars (25-6). Jessica Sullivan and Allie Ouimet had the goals for Hoffman Estates (1-25), which got its first win of the season in overtime in Tuesday's play-in game against Elk Grove.
• Fremd got 3-goal efforts from Sam DiCanio, Nicole Degla and Sam Barry to eliminate St. Viator 16-3.
The third-seeded Vikings (13-16) meet second-seeded Palatine in Friday's 8:15 p.m. semifinal.
• Sectional host Palatine (23-5) got 7 goals from senior Rachel Chumbook and 4 from junior Caroline Wojtas in a 13-3 victory over Rolling Meadows. Erin Pletch had 2 goals for Rolling Meadows.
The sectional championship game is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
Mundelein sectional
Mid-Suburban League champion Wheeling advanced with a 12-8 decision against Vernon Hills.
Senior Emily Sowa led Wheeling with 5 goals and junior Theresa Godlewski had 4, with Shannon Richards contributing 2.
The third-seeded Wildcats (20-9) meet No. 2 seed Mundelein in Friday's 8:15 p.m. semifinal. The other semi, at 7 p.m., features top seed Stevenson against No. 5 seed Lake Forest.
The sectional championship game will begin at 1 p.m. Saturday.
Glenbrook South sectional
The top four seeds all advanced, meaning Friday's semifinals will be No. 1 Loyola against No. 4 Maine East, and No. 2 New Trier against No. 3 Maine South.
New Trier stopped Prospect 10-1 on Thursday as Danielle McCallister had the lone goal for the Knights.
Maine South eliminated Hersey with an 8-5 decision. Katie Lindholm led the Huskies with 3 goals.
The Glenbrook South sectional title game is at 1:30 p.m. Saturday.
