Yard, deck not welcoming

When we moved to our house 15 years ago, we were excited about our large deck and backyard and looked forward to spending our summers entertaining. This was especially true as we met all our neighbors and settled into the community. However, we quickly found that there was nothing welcoming about the deck or the yard. While large, the deck is not cozy. Instead of being a space to be with family and friends, it remains a place where no one wants to be. We would love to be able to bring some character to our outdoor space and make it a destination for our kids, friends and neighbors.

From the experts

The backyard before the makeover does not have any lounging areas. No place to gather and limited on space.

The use of the deck has not been ideal.

We would like to put a new sectional set on the deck. It would face out away from the house and look out over the yard. It would be placed to avoid the patio doors.

We would also like to add a bar-height adirondack picnic table set to maximize the use and ability to dine outside.

To extend the outdoor season we would like to add an outdoor heater by the sectional area.
