Eighth-grade mentors steering children in right direction at District 116

When he was identified as a leader by administrators at Round Lake Middle School, eighth-grader Marco Hernandez liked the idea of working with younger children who may have behavior problems or struggle socially. There was one hitch - Marco would have to spend one Saturday morning each month at the middle school mentoring at-risk children. Seeing the improvement in the younger students through the Second Saturday program has made Marco and two other eighth-grade mentors glad they're participating. Full story.

Driver injured when car strikes fuel truck in Elk Grove

Elk Grove firefighters extricated a woman whose car collided with a fuel truck on Higgins Road yesterday morning. Elk Grove Fire Battalion Chief Mike Sellers said the crash took place about 9 a.m. midway between Arlington Heights Road and Route 53. Full story.

Official: Unsafe elevator shaft source of fire at Elgin Tower Building

A fire believed to have started last night in an elevator shaft that city inspectors have declared unsafe in the past damaged the Elgin Tower Building, according to fire officials. The building, which was built in 1929 and once housed 32 tenants, has been plagued by a host of safety issues, according to Elgin Mayor David Kaptain. Full story.

Ventura's frustration shows after White Sox loss

Nobody affiliated with the White Sox wants to go through another miserable season like last year, and manager Robin Ventura's name is at or near the top of that list. So, after the Sox looked very 2013-ish in a 5-1 loss to the Diamondbacks in front of 18,6212 bored fans yesterday at U.S. Cellular Field, Ventura didn't brush it off or talk about going out and getting them tomorrow.
