The Vernon Hills Park District board invites the public to an open house from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 17, at the new park maintenance facility in Century Park North, 1400 Indianwood Drive.

Individuals and families can take tours of the 15,000-square-foot building and enjoy light refreshments. Ground was broken in May 2013 as a cumulative effort by the park staff to create a facility that would enhance the ability to provide the logistic support needed to meet the needs of the community.

The former maintenance facility on Phillip Drive was 8,200 square feet smaller than the new one. The extra space allows for all vehicles and equipment to be stored inside, and there is an enhanced storage area on the mezzanine level for dry goods.

The facility features improved locker rooms, office spaces and a lunch area for the 10 full-time staff and seasonal staff. Additional parking is available for Century Park's programs, events, and leisure activities.

Careful consideration was put into the improvement of watershed management, and an abundance of biodiversity plantings are included in the landscape design.
