Oakton program looks at historical roots of Mideast conflict

While the Arab-Israel conflict is often seen as a competition between Zionism and Palestinian nationalist groups, it is rooted in a much longer history, which will be explored at a free lecture 11 a.m. Thursday, May 15, at the Oakton Community College Skokie campus, 7701 N. Lincoln Ave. (Room P103). Noted Mideast scholar Jacob Lassner of Northwestern University focuses on how Jews and Arabs both use stories of distant pasts to create their identities and shape their politics.

The lecture also details the ways in which history is absorbed, internalized, and then processed among these two distinctive groups.
