Softball / Northwest roundup

It was déjà vu for senior Kayla Kaufman and sophomore Molly Muhs.

For the second day in a row, they each hit home runs for Fremd's softball team as the Vikings posted a 12-2 five-inning victory over visiting Hersey on Thursday.

Joining in on the Fremd home run parade was junior Lauren Vanhavermaet, who connected for her second of the season.

It was Kaufman's fourth and Muhs' third as they both went 2-for-3 at the plate. Kaufman also doubled.

Muhs' homer came with one out in the second inning and gave Fremd a 1-0 lead it never relinquished.

Lea Barrett improved her record to 4-1 by tossing a complete game for Fremd. The junior struck out two and walked one while tossing a 6-hitter against the Huskies (8-14-1, 2-9).

Seniors Leigh Farina and Tracy Welninski also had doubles for Fremd (16-7, 8-3) which plays host to Barrington (19-8, 9-2) at 4:30 p.m. today.

Maine West 16, Glenbrook North 3: Grace Feldkamp tossed a 3-hitter with 6 strikeouts for the visiting Warriors (11-11, 6-2) and also went 4-for-5 with 2 runs and 2 RBI in the CSL North game.

Kayla Pociejewski (3-for-5 with 2 runs, 4 RBI, double, 3-run homer), Monica Liwag (3-for-5, 2 runs, 2 doubles, 4 RBI, 3-run homer) and Abbey Herling (3-for-5, 3 runs, 2 RBI) led the Warriors' offense.

Alyssa Pegoraro also doubled for West, which had 19 hits

St. Viator 17, Regina 2 (6 inn.): Junior pitcher Krystal Harris won her third game while tossing a 5-hitter for the visiting Lions (13-10) who received at least 1 hit from everyone in their lineup in the nonconfernce game.

Kristen Hackel led the way with 4 hits including a pair of doubles. Teammate Tess Kaiser also had 2 doubles while Mary Gerbatsch added 3 hits.
