Students donate 1865 book to Lincoln Library

SPRINGFIELD - A group of middle school students has given the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum a 150-year-old book that may change a perceived fact about the nation's 16th president.

A group of 11 River Grove School students presented the copy of "National Portrait Gallery of Eminent Americans" from 1865 to the museum last Friday.

The two volume book contains an engraving of Lincoln that seems to be based on a photograph historians previously thought was taken in April 1863. But the students' copy of the book says the copyright date on the engraving is 1862.

The school received its edition of the book from an anonymous donor.

Museum curator James Cornelius says the students have "added to our understanding of Abraham Lincoln's life and times."
