Prospect lines up a tournament title

Prospect's girls soccer team enjoyed a thrilling finale in the State Line Challenge on Saturday.

The Knights first topped host Moline 1-0 in their morning semifinal before rolling past Geneseo 6-1 in the championship game.

The semifinal against Moline was tense, as Prospect tried to protect the lead it had gained on Sarah LaCost's first-half goal assisted by Elena Cukurs.

With a little over three minutes left in the matchup, Moline was awarded a spot kick. Knights keeper Mehgan Rickett made a stop on the kick, then denied a rebound attempt before the ball was cleared.

In the title game, Aly Kobler had 2 goals while Emily Novak, Martina Kowalczuk, Alyssa Cwidak and Andi Marfilius also scored.

The Knights, who also won a Friday game in the tournament, improved to 8-1-1 over their last 10 matches. They return to MSL East play on Wednesday against Rolling Meadows.

Buffalo Grove 3, Elk Grove 0: Allie Ingham scored twice, Kelli Zickert provided a goal and an assist, and Jessica Kovach provided a helper on one of Ingham's goals to lead the Bison in MSL East play as keeper Sarah O'Connor earned a shutout.
