Evansville schools get physical fitness grant

INDIANAPOLIS - The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $385,000 grant to an Indiana school corporation to get its students more active and eating better.

The department announced this week Evansville Vanderburgh School Corp. is among 67 recipients nationwide receiving the grants. The school district was the only grant recipient in Indiana.

The grants are intended to help schools and other entities implement physical activity and nutrition programs for their students. Recipients must create programs that help students make progress toward meeting their state standards for physical education. They also must either provide instruction in healthy eating habits and good nutrition or provide one of several physical fitness activities, such as teaching students to improve or maintain their physical well-being.
