Police offer self-defense class:

Vernon Hills police will host a women's self-defense class from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 6, at the department headquarters, 740 Lakeview Parkway. The class is free and open to women age 8 and up (children under 14 must be accompanied by a parent). The class instructor is Harriet Johnson, a former police officer and expert in self-defense and director of Hapkido School in Crystal Lake. Topics to be covered are: basic principles of survival and awareness; vulnerable areas of the body; psychology of fear and how to make it work for you; and, the basic principles of self-defense.
