Driver charged in crash near Antioch

A 22-year-old man has been charged in connection with a two-vehicle crash on Route 59 near Antioch that injured three people Tuesday night, authorities said.

The driver of a black Volkswagen Beetle was traveling south on Route 59 when he swerved into northbound lanes just north of Grass Lake Road and struck a minivan head-on about 6 p.m., Lake County sheriff's Sgt. Scott Kurek said.

He was charged with unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and several traffic violations, Kurek said. Lake County sheriff's officials have not yet released the name of the man, who was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in fair condition.

The male driver, 67, and the female passenger, 19, in the minivan also were taken to Condell in fair condition, Kurek said.

The accident shut down all lanes on Route 59 from Beach Grove to Grass Lake roads for about 40 minutes.
