Man, 28, held without bond for UIC shower assault

A 28-year-old man is being held without bond after authorities say he sexually assaulted a University of Illinois at Chicago student in a dorm shower.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports a Cook County judge denied bond for Tavares Humphries during a court appearance Wednesday.

Prosecutors say the convicted sex offender followed students inside the residence hall, stole items from a dorm room and then attacked the 18-year-old while she was in the shower.

He's charged with attempted murder, aggravated criminal sexual assault, aggravated kidnapping, residential burglary and battery of a police officer for Monday morning's attack.

It wasn't immediately clear if Humphries has an attorney.

He was previously convicted of sexual assault in 2001 and has also been convicted of drug charges and failing to register as a sex offender.
