Wedl, Wauconda roll in home openers

After opening the season indoors in Rosemont last week and beating Hampshire decisively twice, Wauconda's softball team had its home opener Tuesday.

The Bulldogs won decisively again.

This time, Kayla Wedl struck out 11 batters and helped her own cause with a home run, as Wauconda beat Palatine 9-2 to improve to 3-0.

The Bulldogs trailed 1-0 until the bottom of the fourth, when Jena Heck blasted a 2-run homer. The hosts added another run in the fifth and then busted out with 6 runs in the sixth.

Wauconda got 2 hits apiece from Wedl, Heck, Lauren Nee, Paige Motley, Angie Exline and freshman Sarah Ricci. Heck, Motley and Taylor McCarthy all doubled. Wedl (3-0) allowed only 4 hits, including a pair of doubles in the seventh, and did not walk a batter. She yielded an unearned run in the first.

Grayslake Central 11, Vernon Hills 0: Brittany Brown allowed only 1 hit in a five-inning complete game, and Theresa Curtis and Jamie Brew homered for the Rams.

Both Curtis and Brew knocked in 3 runs, while Shelby White went 3-for-3 with 2 RBI and 2 runs scored. Brew and Katie Strickland (2 RBI) each had 2 hits for Grayslake Central (4-2).

Brown struck out three and walked one. Sami Saliba had the only hit for Vernon Hills (0-5).

Fremd 10, Carmel 7: Jenny Behan homered twice for theCorsairs, who also got long balls fron Emma Bartz, Amy Abel and Sarah Koesser.

Carmel led 7-5 heading into the seventh.
