Baseball/Fox Valley roundup

Larkin Hanselmann, Connor Kraus and Dean Christakes combined to allow just 3 hits Tuesday as the Cary-Grove baseball team opened the season with a 5-1 win over Murphysboro at Rent One Ballpark in downstate Marion.

Wyatt Mascarella had a triple and 2 RBI for the Trojans and Christakes also drove in a run.

Trinity Valley (TX) 11, Westminster Christian 8: Giving up only 4 hits is typically a recipe for success, but the Warriors (0-2) found out that committing 4 errors and walking 9 batters can quickly sour that success as they dropped their second straight in Texas on Tuesday. Tyler Mamrot went 2-for-4 with a double and 2 RBI for Westminster.

Vernon Hills 4, Jacobs 3 (8 inn.): The Golden Eagles (2-1) watched a 3-1 lead squander in the later innings and the Cougars walked off on an RBI triple to center to give Jacobs its first blemish of the young season. Danny Vandewalker reached on 2 hits and both Ben Murray and Daniel Tenayuca had RBI for the Golden Eagles.

Monday's late results

Southwest Christian 9, Westminster Christian 7 (9 inn.): Despite scoring in the bottom of the sixth to tie it at 7, the Warriors could not rally a second time, falling as the home team with the game being held at Texas Christian University Monday night. Tyler Mamrot led the Warriors' offense with 2 hits, including a double, and a pair of RBI while teammate Ian Merlak had an RBI single in a 5-run fourth. Tyler Schoemann was saddled with the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth inning.

College baseball

Fredrick College 12, ECC 1: The trip out East has not been kind to the Spartans (2-6) as they lost the series finale at Myrtle Beach, S. C., Tuesday afternoon. With the Spartans only mustering 3 hits, Sean Reszotko plated the only run by grounding into a fielders choice in the fourth inning. David Palmer suffered the loss.
