St. Viator falls in Florida opener

Playing at the ESPN Sports Complex in Orlando, Fla., St. Viator's softball team lost its season opener 6-5 to Elizabeth Forward, Pa.

The Lions' offense was led by Kristen Hackel and Olivia Michalik, who each had 2 hits and drove in a run. Michalik also ended a threat by Elizabeth Forward by making long running catch with the bases loaded.

St. Viator senior pitcher Sam Hogan also doubled in a run in the 3-run seventh inning but the rally fell just short.

Lions freshman Cam Vanvalkenburg brought the crowd to its feet with a spectacular headlong diving catch while skidding into the base of the outfield wall.
