All-star shootout set for April 4 at College of Lake County

The fifth annual Lake County Senior Shootout All-Star basketball game is set to go on Friday, April 4.

Featuring the top high school senior boys and girls basketball players in Lake County, the game will take place on the campus of the College of Lake County in Grayslake.

"We have a lot of talent participating in this year's game," said event coordinator Fred Fleming. "Between the girls and boys we have at least six Division I and eight Division II players.

"This is our fifth year sponsoring this game and my partner (Dwayne Springs) and I cannot believe the continued support we get from the coaches, players and fans in Lake County year after year. I guarantee that you won't be disappointed with the activities we have planned this year."

The game will be featuring the coed Three-Point Shootout and the popular Slam Dunk competition.

"Last year, the Slam Dunk competition was spectacular but we are expecting this year's competition to be great as well," Fleming said.

The girls game begins at 6 p.m. while the boys are scheduled for 8 p.m. Admission is $5.

The games will be played under the rules and guidelines of the Illinois High School Association.

The West girls team will be coached by Nate Flannery of Grayslake North.

Team members are Morgan Dahlstrom (Grayslake Central), Carson Sparkman (Grayslake Central), Angie Kirchoff (Barrington), Brooke Gunderson (Barrington), Paige Gallimore (Antioch), Kathleen Felicelli (Carmel), Cassidy Kloss (Carmel), Kathryn Hoffman (Deerfield), Kaylie Kanzler (Grant), Brittney Thibeaux (Grayslake North), Kendall Detweiller (Grayslake North), Lizzy LoGrande (Highland Park) and Annie Keller (Lake Forest)

Lake Forest Academy's Chris Tennyson will direct the East team, which will feature Sam Ney (Lakes), Rosie Lynch (Libertyville), Lauren Rose (Mundelein), Samantha Rodriguez (North Chicago), Carolyn Leonard (North Chicago), Justice Clark (Round Lake), Sydney Smith (Vernon Hills), Lauren Webb (Vernon Hills), Hailey Leinhart (Warren), Kristen O'Brien (Warren), Lauren Nee (Wauconda), Tyvena Scafe (Zion-Benton), Dija Diouf (Lake Forest Academy) and Emily Krasnow (Lake Forest Academy).

The West Boys team will be coached by Ryan Webber of Warren and team members will include Malcolm Reed (Grayslake Central), Charlie Anderson (Grayslake Central), Kurt Hall (North Chicago), Jayquan McCloud (North Chicago), Javairius Amos-Mays (North Chicago), Arnold Shead (North Chicago), Tyler Williams (Waukegan), Eric Gillespie (Warren), Adrian Deere (Warren), Jack Lipp (Libertyville), Matt Reed (Libertyville), Steve Dunning ((Grant), Ryan Noda (Grant), AJ Marsiglio (Antioch) and Hamza Abdellatif (Antioch).

The East team, to be led by Tim Bowen of Carmel, will feature Michal Tomasiewicz (Lakes), Malik Yarborough (Zion-Benton), Maurice Young (Zion-Benton), Chris Moragne (Zion-Benton), Michael Barr (Carmel), Billy Kirby (Carmel), Jack George (Carmel), Dion Head (Wauconda), Matt Morrissey (Stevenson), Derek Parola (Mundelein), Austin Madrzyk (Barrington), Karnell Wright (Round Lake), Brad Kruse (Lake Zurich), Eric Porter (Deerfield) and Stefanos Fasianos (Deerfield).

Women's swimming

Towson University senior Melanie Rowl and wrapped up her collegiate swimming career at the NCAA Division I Championships at the University of Minnesota with a 22nd-place finish in the 200 butterfly (1:56.76.).

She also placed 48th in the 100 butterfly with a lifetime best time of 53.77.

Softball

Wheaton College sophomore infielder Christina Sandstedt (Lake Zurich) was named a College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin softball player of the week.

Sandstedt hit .548 (17-of-31) with 12 runs, 5 doubles, 2 triples, 13 RBI and an .839 slugging percentage for the Thunder during the week.

She had a hit in each of Wheaton's eight games including five multihit games.

Sandstedt was 4-for-4 with 3 doubles and 4 runs in an 8-2 win over Cornell, 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBI in a 6-4 win against RPI and 3-for-5 with 3 runs and 3 RBI in a 12-7 win over Oswego State.

Women's lacrosse

Augustana freshman Olivia Mayer (Libertyville) forced 4 turnovers and tied for the team lead with 3 ground balls as the Vikings (5-0) posted a 20-10 triumph at Adrian.

For the season, Emily Handrahan (Lake Zurich) has 14 points (7 goals and 7 assists).

Baseball

Senior pitcher Ryan Thorsen (Grant) was honored as an athlete of the week for Concordia-Chicago.

Thorsen pitched 8 innings of the Cougars' first shutout of the season, 7-0 over the Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology on March 14. The southpaw allowed just 5 hits and 1 walk while fanning nine. Thorsen threw 123 pitches in his winning effort, 79 for strikes.

Women's tennis

Sophomore Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein) and her doubles partner Kim Sawyer picked up the lone win for Augustana in a 5-4 loss to Coe.

MacDonald and Sawyer defeated Diannah Watson and Laura Birky 8-4 in the nonconference match at the Quad City Tennis Club in Moline.
