Inmate who escaped from Mich. prison fights return from Indiana

LAPORTE, Ind. - A convicted killer who was captured in northern Indiana after escaping from a Michigan prison is scheduled to appear before a judge for an extradition hearing.

Michael David Elliot is contesting a warrant seeking his return to Michigan. He is scheduled to appear Thursday afternoon for a hearing before a LaPorte County judge.

Elliot escaped Feb. 2 from Ionia Correctional Facility in Michigan and was caught in northern Indiana the next day. He is charged with auto theft in Indiana. He's also charged with carjacking, kidnapping and escape in Michigan.

Elliot was serving life in prison without parole for fatally shooting four people and burning down their Gladwin County house in 1993 when he was 20 years old.

Elliot refused to waive the extradition hearing.
